Bart- My 35+ fireplace exterior is stucco/masonry cement that has cracked, chipped and fallen off the chimney...moisture has gotten behind the masonry. What is the best way to repair this?

Hi George,

The best way to repair this is to remove all the loose materials so you have a stable substrate.

Mount galvanized lathe to the chimney as reinforcement, then apply 3 coats of stucco.

After 28 days apply a high-quality water repellent, such as ChimneySaver, that is 100% vapor permeable to allow the chimney to breathe.

I would also recommend you have a level 2 inspection on the chimney interior and system performed by a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to determine the internal condition and suitability for continued or future use.
