Chimney & Fireplaces/Rust Stains at base of chimney...and brick issues

Question
Bart,

During the past year, we've had about three serious rain storms (2" plus in
one evening/day) in my suburb of Philadelphia, PA.  Each time, after the
storms have passed, I've noticed that a rivulet of rusty water has made it's
way down the white-mortared basement walls.  The chimney is strictly for my
oil heater.  The house is about 106 years old.

What's the rust colored water?  (The chimney's not capped, by the way.)  I just
had the heater inspected and tuned up.  The heater guy said he saw a few
bits of rust at the base?

So should I get thsi inspected by a chimney sweep?  If so, do you have any
suggestions for quality, trustworthy sweeps?

Answer
Hi Garreth,

Yes, you definitely need it inspected and a solution found!

At the very least, the chimney should be capped.  If you're getting 2"+ rain in the yard, you're also getting 2"+ rain down the chimney!

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site diagnosis of your problem.

You can find a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep at www.csia.org.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.

Sincerely,
