Chimney & Fireplaces/Shallow hearth

Question
I am moving into a house that was built in 1904.  According to the owner the fireplace was built to burn coal.  It is much to shallow to place wood in it as the smoke just billows out the front and makes a big mess.  I had an idea about using metal to form a sort of rim at the top of the hearth that would jut out  a bit to funnel the smoke into the flue.  What are your thoughts on something like this?

Hi Dana,

Before using or attempting to use that "fireplace" again, I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site diagnosis of your problem.

Have them perform a Level 2 chimney inspection and make sure they video scan the interior.  Typically, these units have hidden problems that must be addressed.
