Chimney & Fireplaces/Water inside chimney

Question
Hi-

 We have gas fireplace and our home is brand new. We have noticed that when it rains there is sound of running water in the area of the fireplace and also a sound very much like a constant dripping, when we talked to the builder he brushed it aside saying it has to do with the water hitting the chimney and running down the outside of it, but I am not convinced. What could be causing this noise.
