Chimney & Fireplaces/Woodburning fireplace insert

Question
I will try to make this very breif.  I recently purchased my first home which has a woodburning fireplace insert.  I can't find a brand name anywhere on the insert but I know it is not too old and has a Stratford blower.  It has 2 holes on the side to let air in (I think).  I built a fire and had the flue open and the two holes on the side open and the doors closed.  When I wanted to put the fire out I kept the doors closed, closed the holes on the side and kept the flue open.  This was midnight.  Everything was fine until the next afternoon around noon smoke started coming out from the seam around the top of the 2 doors.  I was wondering what would have caused this?   I am afraid to build any more fires because my basement (which is where the fireplace is)reaks of smoke.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Michele
