Question
I was told by my brother some time ago, when I decided to use my woodstove to heat the basement, that having an oil furnace and a woodstove on the same chimney is not a good idea.  I asked him why and he couldn't come up with an answer for that.  Should I be concerned about running a woodstove on the same chimney as an oil furnace?

Answer
Stephen,

Your brother is correct.  Each oil and woodburning appliance needs its own separate flue.  National venting standards prohibit sharing the flue with these types of appliances due to potential draft problems and cross-flow problems.

You should contact a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to examine the situation.  He or she should give you a proposal to reline the flue with two separate insulated lining systems - one for each appliance.  You can find a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep at www.csia.org.

Good luck with your upcoming chimney lining project and thanks for using AllExperts.Com!
