-----Question-----
I have a brick chimney with a Terra-Cotta flue. I want to seal the small gap between the mortor crown and the flue?  I was told by the hardware store to use roofing cement that comes in a caulking tube.
-----Answer-----
Hi Tom,

The hardware store is ABSOLUTELY INCORRECT.  You should NEVER use roofing cement to fix a chimney - otherwise it would be called "chimney cement".  :-)

I recommend CrownSeal or CrownCoat Flexilble Crown Repair by SaverSystems.  These products are specifically designed to repair this type of problem and carry a long-term warranty.

Any CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep should be able to do that repair for you or sell you the materials should you wish to do the repairs yourself.

To find a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep, go to www.csia.org.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.

Answer
Hi Tom,

You didn't say silicone - you said roofing cement.

Silicone is a patch that will hold for a while, but the SaverSystems Products are a long term-colution.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.
