Question
We recently removed the siding on our chimney chase to replace the rotted out  siding and OSB wood underneath.  When we opened it up, I noticed that there was no sort of insulation.  I was staring at the back of the gas fireplace.  Since we have it opened now, can we insulate it?  We get a terrible draft in the winter and lose a lot of cool air in the summer through the fireplace. Our house isn't that old, maybe 15 years.  I don't want to burn the house down by adding insulation if it isn't supposed to be there, but I'm thinking that it should be insulated.  What kind of insulation can I use?

Hi Lori,

Yes, you can insulate that with standard wall insulation.  You'll need to make sure that there is some sort of backing in place to keep the insulation from falling onto the fireplace and chimney.

I would recommend sealing this area very well as this, as you've described, is a MAJOR source of heat and cooling loss from the home.
