Question
we just had a company come in and repair our chimney from the roof line up (bricks had started falling away etc) . Additionally they had intended to install a liner for our two gas furnaces. After knocking out a coupe of bricks at the point on the chimney that is opposite from the flew entrances, ie. where the exhaust pipes from the furnaces enter the chimney, they decided to quit because they said they could not get the "tile" out. They explained that they would not be able to install a liner but that they could come back in the spring and coat the inside of the chimney with a sealer.







1. If we have tile do we need sealer?







2. Are there brands or types of sealer that are better than others and, or are there brands we should watch out for?







3. I guess they need room to install a rigid coupling ?,.. why not just open up a larger hole?

Hi Lawrence,

The system you are referring to is not listed as a chimney lining system.  Be very careful of a system such as this!  typically it is oversold and underdelivers in the end.

If relining is impossible, I would recommend you consider changing your affected appliances over to a direct- or power-vented system.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site diagnosis of your problem.
