Chimney & Fireplaces/converting wood burning fireplace to gas

Question
We have a brick fireplace that we've had many wood-burning fires over the years.  We are planning to convert it to gas using vented gas logs.  This is for aesthetics only and not an insert.  We do not have a liner in the chimney.  Is there any reason to have one installed for the gas conversion?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Answer
Hi Jane,

Aesthetics or not, EVERY chimney MUST have a liner in it.  Masonry chimneys should ALL have a vitreous clay flue tile liner.  If they do not have a lining system, one should ALWAYS be installed.  Typically the installation will be of an insulated stainless steel lining system.

A gas fire is actually harder on the chimney and puts more heat into the system than woodburning.

Do NOT use this chimney system unless it is lined.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do an on-site Level 2 chimney inspection with video scan before any further use of this system.

You can find a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep at www.csia.org.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.
