Chimney & Fireplaces/double-sided fireplace

Bart,

I am an architect in NYC working on the design for a house in Uruguay.  The project currently includes the schematic design of a freestanding double-sided fireplace which separates the living room from the dining room.  The local architect and contractor are telling us that they are not comfortable building a double-sided fireplace.  Is this truly an unwise thing to build, or does it simply require the appropriate expertise in detailing the project.  If the answer is in the detailing, can you recommend someone for the job?
