Question
I bought a brick house (1950's era) this spring. At that time, I had the
chimney inspected and cleaned by a chimney sweep in my area. The chimney
sweep informed me that the floor to my fireplace (cement) is cracked in a few
places and there is also a wooden sub-floor below this. He suggested
removing both of these and installing a steel plate. Can I repair this myself by
using furnace cement, then a steel plate on top, then maybe fire brick on top?  
Or is that overkill?  Thank you for your time.

Hi Kerry,

If there is wood under the fireplace, it should be completely removed.

You need to remove it, install the proper non-combustible supports (preferably masonry), then reinstall the floor.

See www.bia.org ro technical notes on residential chimneys and firplaces and NFPA 211 for construction and clearance requirements.

Don't use the fireplace until these repairs have been completed.
