Question
We have cracked tiles (fallen) in one flue. Originally had  basement oil burner, wood stove on 1st floor in same flue. We had the oil burner vented out now through power vent in basement wall. We want to use wood stove on 1st floor. Steel chimney liner and labor and mason to cost $2400. My question is why will the liner end just below wood stove connection with a cap on the bottom? Why can not the pipe go to the basement and utilize the clean-out? Have you heard of this before?
How will the 6" steel pipe be stabilized in an 8" flue?
How will the pipe be cleaned if there is no opening at the bottom?

Hi Toni,

That's a typical installation.

It can be installed with a clean-out in the basement, it just costs more money because you're using more lining system.

The piping should be insulated to maintain a UL listing.  If they are not insulating it, I would not have them do the work.

To clean the piping, the connector piping is removed from the tee and serviced, then it is reassembled with 3 screws per joint and a male end down joint.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do the work.
