Question
i just purchased a house that was built in 93 and a security fireplace was installed but no gas was hooked up we just hooked up gas to it but when it runs after a few minutes the flames turn blue and float off the burner i have check both the intake and the flue and both are clear it vents out the back of the house out of this square black vent

Answer
Matt,

The ghosting or oxygen starvation you described is classic of a problem with the direct venting being damaged or disconnected somewhere. There could also be insulation packing in the vent collar that was not removed or if it was switched from rear to top and they packed the rear take off.

Find someone competent with gas hearth appliances, (NFI certified gas specialist) and have them inspect and correct it. Until then, shut it off! Good luck and happy New Year!
