Chimney & Fireplaces/gas starter

Question
I am building a house and I asked my builder to install a gas starter in the wood-burning fireplace.  He checked with the gas company and the fireplace installer and both refused to install it.  They've said there have been accidents with the starters and their insurance will not cover them if they install them.  Are they really that dangerous?  I can't see how they would be any more dangerous than gas logs.  Would it be a mistake to install one ourselves?

Answer
Hi Cathy,

Some localities may prohibit or discourage the installation of gas log lighter bars.  Unfortunately, I don't know what the codes or conditions are in your area so I couldn't comment.

I can tell you that we will not install log lighter bars for propane-supplied homes due to the potential liability.

We do not recommend that homeowners do ANY type of gasfitting due to the potential hazards of mis-installations.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Good luck with your new home and Thanks for using AllExperts.Com!
