Question
The cast iron fireplace was being pushed away from the wall causing a large gap to appear at the top, after removing the fire surround it was found that the retaining clips had failed.Removing the fire back it was found that sand had been used for insulation behind the fire back.What meterial should be used to replace this on refixing to give the required insulation?
Hi George,
If sand was properly used in the original application, sand should be used again in the repair.
Any type of sand, as long as the grain size is similar should give you a similar amount of insulating value.
I would recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site diagnosis of your problem and give you some site-specific advice.
