Chimney & Fireplaces/masonry chimney installation

Question
We are having 'Cultured Stone' placed on our exterior chimney.  The roof was shingled a little more than 3 months ago, and the chimney chase has been tightly wraped twice (double plied) with tyveck.  The roof is a 10/12 and the chase sits approximatley 4' from the end roof edge (chimney comes out the roof).  Flashing was installed around the lower chimney after the tyveck and also along the saddle to the back ridge.  The mason has been installing the 'Cultuerd Stone' starting at the bottom.  Metal lathing was nailed properly with galv. nails over the flashing and running up the fuul length of the chase.  A skin coat of motar was applied as well as setting block.  I noticed that a motar joint and block is sitting flush with the roof shingles.  Though I have metal fashing around the bottom of the chimney and step under the close few shingles, should there be flashing over the stone at the bottom, or should they have started the stoned just above the upper lip of the falshing?  Will this cause potential leaks, deteriorate the mortar along the bottom two joints, or deteriorate the shingles?  I am curious if this is proper installation.

Answer
Hi Bill,

The sequence of materials should be:

Flashing
Weather Barrier
Galvanized Metal Lath
Mortar
Stone Veneer

There shouldn't need to be flashing over the stone as long as it the material order is as listed above over the flashing.

If it's not in that order, you'll have an issue down the road.

Go to http://www.culturedstone.com/technical/ for more detailed schematics.

Good luck with your project and thanks for using AllExperts.com!
