Bart:
We reciently had our foof reshingled. We had leaks around the stone chimny that protudes through the roof. Our roofing contactor showed us whwer the mortar joints had suffered freeze cracks from water penetrating the joints between the mortar and the stone. We removed a piece of mortar and found crumbled sand behind the joint. I know this joint needs replacing but what do I use to to seal all the other cracked joints to iliminate water intrusion?

Hi Ken,

If the chimney is that bad, it will very likely need rebuilt.  It sounds like it's beyond patching or tuckpointing at this point.

I recommend hiring a professional to thoroughly evaluate the chimney.  

You should contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site diagnosis of your problem to determine exactly what the correct course of repair should be.
