Question
I am wanting to build an outdoor fireplace connecting to a bar with a built in BBQ pit.  The Fireplace/chimney is going to be about 6 feet tall, 4 feet wide and abour 3 feet deep.  I plan to use old Cordell Reds brick and Acme brick, then cover the brick with flagstone.  I need to know what type of foundation to use.  The area that I'm building this on used to have a brick and cement patio but I dug it all up so that there is nothing but earth.  Can I use a CMU block foundation or do a have to pour a slab?  Any advise (or website) on constructing the slab and fireplace/chimney would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Coley,

You can use either block or concrete for a foundation on this project.

You need to check with your local code authority to determine the required depth of the foundation.
