Chimney & Fireplaces/residue on glass

Question
Hey Bart,
In put this ventless natural gas fireplace in a 10x12 room with mostly sliding
glass windows.  Theb fireplace seems to be emiting some sort of strange
whitish-greasy residue that is very difficult to wash of of my windows.  What's
up with that?  If that's the norm for ventless fireplaces, that's a real annoying
feature.  What if anything can I do?  If nothing can be done do you
recommend a cleaner for this nasty substance that gives even windex a run
for its money.

Answer
Hi Jack,

I would consult the manufacturer of the room-vented appliance.  These appliances are really not vent-free, they're room vented.

Sounds like there's airborne something in the room that is being burned when the appliance is running and it's being ejected into the room, then settling on the windows.

Kind of makes you wonder what you've been breathing, doesn't it?

I would recommend replacing the appliance with a vented unit for air quality reasons.

The residue is not only going to be on the windows, but on everything in that room.

For the windows, I would try a cleaner for glass-top electric ranges.  That should take it off.

I recommend you contact a local CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep to do some on-site diagnosis of your problem.

You can find a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep at www.csia.org.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.
