Chimney & Fireplaces/sandstone fireplace cleaning

Question
The front of our fireplace is floor-to-ceiling sandstone. We recently had a gas insert installed and the area around the new insert is blackened with soot. What is the best way to clean this? Also the fireplace is/was a heatalater and we would like to plug the vent slots in a way that won't be unattractive. Can you help?
Hi Eunice,
You need to contact a local brick mason to examine the stone to see what type of sandstone it actually is. He (or she) can recommend the appropriate cleaning materials for that particular type of stone. "Sandstone" is often used for at least 10 different types of stone that I am aware of. Kind of like "Kleenex" is used as a name for facial tissue.
Regarding plugging the vent slots: Don't do it, you'll cause overheating and a potential fire hazard.
