Chimney & Fireplaces/The small holes at the inner walls of temco flue pipe elbows

Question
Hi,

I perform Level 2 firplace inspections on firepalces of all types.

I started out by removing damaged chimneys after the 94 earthquake.

This is all I do now and I have noted that there are a lot of "holes or gaps" within this industry and there is no regulation whatsoever in the LA area.

In other words, anyone can say I am a chimney inspector and there would be no violation of law.

I have also noted that there is no school, class, certification, government regulation and etc that is designed to teach the standards of inspection, such as how to determine a break in the structure, when the grouting between the flue tiles is worn enough to call for regrouting, when should a stainless steel liner be used and etc.

Do you know of a program for this. Meaning a school, class, government certification etc., that actually sets the standards?

F-I-R-E does not but seems to say it does.  I took Dales class and am certified and value the knowledge I received from him but it is not a school that prepares one to inspect.

CSIA is for chimney sweeps.  I am not a sweep.  I inspect only and make out a detailed report of my findings and recommendations.

Answer
John,

I recommend the CSIA technical courses, specifically the Diagnosis & Documentation Series.

This series of courses, as well as the F.I.R.E. Classes will give you a good amount of knowledge regarding chimney inspections.

You can contact the Chimney Safety Institute of America at www.csia.org.
