Hi! We are going to self-install a flexible liner in our unlined masonry chimney. I
can't find out if insulating the liner is legally REQUIRED or simply recommended.  
Can you shed some light on the topic? Thanks.

Hi Allan,

A liner venting wood or oil should be insulated, if the chimney is unlined, to meet the UL1777 standard.

This is to keep heat from transferring through the existing masonry.  There are many products out there to accomplish this from a foil-faced ceramic blanket to a pour-in insulation product such as Chim-Mix or Thermix.  You'll need to check with your individual liner manufacturer to see what they approve and what is listed with their product.

To my knowledge, there is NO liner out there that will pass a UL1777 test and be approved for that listing without insulation.

Spend the money on the insulation. It's not worth a shortcut.  Your home and your family is at stake here.
