Chimney & Fireplaces/What to use for a thermal break between the fireplace footing and fireplace foundation?

Question
Hello,
I am building in VT and have a 5'x7' fireplace footing
located in the center of my basement. The basement floor
will contain radiant heat.
If the fireplace foundation is built on top of the footing
with no thermal break, I am concerned about the heat loss from my radiant floor.

I have several cases of firebrick I got on sale.

Can I use that as a thermal break between the fireplace footing and the fireplace foundation?

The basement fireplace foundation will contain an ash dump
and a flu for a wood stove.
The 1st floor will contain a fireplace which will have
a flu for itself, one for the basement wood stove, and
one for the basement oil furnace.

Thanks for your help,
-Tom

Answer
Hi Tom,

I think as long as the space is sealed with a non-combustible material you should be fine and you're being overly concerned about a non-issue.

If you still have questions, I might suggest you contact Vermont Master Sweeps in Londonderry.  Bob Fish might be able to advise you further.

Thanks for using AllExperts.Com and good luck with your project.

Sincerely,
