Chimney & Fireplaces/wood-burning insert

Question
Hi,
I have a wood burning fireplace insert with 6" flue opening at the top, but I only can put 5" stainless steel liner into my chimney(about 18' from fireplace to the top ). Is it ok if I just use a 6" to 5" adaptor? What happens as I reduce the diameter of the liner?

Using a 5"inch liner rather than the required 6"inch, is like always having a half inch build up of creosote on the flue. You will never get the draft needed to achieve the efficiency you were promised. Not knowing what size your fireplace flue is exactly, you may be able to use a 6"inch round at the collar and transition to a larger oval to provide access for the liner and required insulation.
