China & Hong Kong/Jobs in China

Question
Are there any positions for an english speaker in any other jobs besides teaching?  Such as tour guides?

Answer
Evan,

China probably has more career opportunities and ventures for foreigners than any other Asian country. This is due in part to China's economy (the fastest growing and soon to be largest in the world), and also because westerners in China are still a rarity (compared to, say, Japan, where the market is oversaturated with a foreign labor pool).

As you probably know, teaching English in China is the most popular profession for expats who wish to live in China. You will receive a competitive salary and cozy accommodations in exchange for your lessons, and most teaching gigs require little if any experience nor a college degree.

A position as a tour guide would require you to have a sound familiarity with China and its history and locations. Speaking Chinese or another niche language would probably also be beneficial. This would also require you to actually live in China for an extended period of time.

I certainly don't want to dissuade you from seeking out this kind of position, so my advice would be to submit your resume in person to the larger travel agencies around Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong. Accepting an English-teaching position in the meantime will provide you with an income and a roof over your head until you can land your dream position.

Other popular and abundant employment opportunities for foreigners in China include reporting, travel reviews, photography, speciality shops and restaurants, DJing and party promotion, and modeling/acting. Check sites such as www.TheBeijinger.com and www.CityWeekend.com.cn for listings.
As I've said before, China truly is the Land of Opportunity, so just show up and choose a career of your choice.
