China & Hong Kong/Books on Traditional Chinese Medicine

Question
I am a University librarian attached to a medical university in Malaysia.  I plan to visit Guangzhou to look for books on Traditional Chinese Medicine.  Can anyone help me please on information on publishers and/or major book sellers in Guangzhou.  I intend to go in late July.

Answer
There is a national book chain called Xin Hua.  In the bigger cities like  Guangzhou they should have some books on TCM.  Before warned though, Chinese book stores do not tend to have much of an English selection.  Another possible source, all of the old Friendship Stores had small English language book shops with TCM books.

You can also check online sources such as www.taobao.com which is an online listing similar to eBay, but much of the stuff being sold is not being auctioned.  The site is in Chinese, but if you play around a bit, you can gradually get the hang of it.  Do some searches in English.  Probably not a good source for mailing to your home, but worth checking out.  Chinese international postal rates are very very reasonable.

If you are there long enough, a trip to Hong Kong (only a couple hours by bus/train) may prove very useful for finding the books you want.  If you decide to pop into Hong Kong, realize that going there will use one of your visa entry/exits, so make sure you have at least a duo entry visa.

Good luck and happy shopping.
