Answer
Hi John,
I can't really answer this question for every one just Australian's but I believe it is the same for Americans, Canadians and British.  You don't need a Visa for either Hong Kong or Macau.  You do need a  Visa for Shenzhen.  This can be arranged while you are there.  The price for American's is quite high where as for Australian's and NZ is a lot cheaper.  I have been to Shenzhen at least half a dozen times.  If you do go to Shenzhen take great care.  Crime is quite high and you really need to pay attention to what is going on around you.

Hope this helps,

Jay
