China & Hong Kong/marriage priority

Question
I have a friend who is getting married to a Chinese woman. He is afraid that she values her political relationship with a purported social 'superior' above her relationship with him, a westerner. This is causing them a lot of grief.

Is this a cultural issue, or a personality issue?

Answer
Hi There,

To be fair, in any culture I believe we can see both examples of where status and "face" is paramount to any other personal relationship, and also examples of where two people love each other way beyond such outside factors.  However, in China things are a bit different, and it is true that status and "face" take on a much more important role than say in the US.  For this reason, it is definitely plausible that your friend has reason to be concerned.

Be Well,
Andrew
