Question Hello! Recently I read an article that spoke about Chinese writing. I learned that you use a brush to make the characters, and they had pictures of school children practicing with their brushes like painting. What do you do for things like students in university who must make notes very quickly? Also for writing checks when you buy something, do you have some kind of portable brush set the way Westerners have ballpoint pens? Chinese looks like such a beautiful language! Be well.
Answer Thank you for your complimentary words on Chinese language, which you said is beautiful.
Speaking of the writing brushes, I guess the book you read is about 100 years old.
Actually we stopped using brushes around 1930s. We use whatever you use to write nowerdays. Surprise!! Now brush writing (calligraphy) is a considered a kind of art. You have to be very skillful and professional in order to write beautifully, which most of Chinese now cannot make do now, which also means we are gratually loosing that tradition.
