AboutNicola Zheng Expertise I can answer questions in English and Chinese, culture, language, and business (conducting business in China) related.
Experience I was born in China and grew up in the US. I've attended Chinese school for 6 years in NY while growing up. I've passed proficiency in the language at the University of Pennsylvania. I work for a company that has an overseas office located in Shanghai, China, so I am very much accustomed to communicating in Chinese as well as conducting business in China (I used to travel there 4 times a year).
Question Next month a Chinese man will be joining our team in Kansas. I thought it would be a nice welcome to wear our name badges and put the Chinese symbols for our name beside our English name. Some thought this might not be appropriate. I just thought it would be a friendly welcome. Advice please. I don't want to offend as he can read English.
Answer Hi Ann,
This is a very thoughtful gesture. But as you pointed out, since he can read in English, it is not necessary to also have everyone's name translated into Chinese for name badge. It's not so much a question of whether it's appropriate as what you are thinking about is definitely not be an offensive gesture, it's a matter of your preference. Hope this helps.
