AboutNicola Zheng Expertise I can answer questions in English and Chinese, culture, language, and business (conducting business in China) related.
Experience I was born in China and grew up in the US. I've attended Chinese school for 6 years in NY while growing up. I've passed proficiency in the language at the University of Pennsylvania. Question Hi,my 10 yr old son has mandarin homework question.
If you went to a chinese elder's 80th birthday celebration, what would you give as your gift, & what wouldnt you give. And what would the typical food be?
Answer Hi Liz,
If you went to a Chinese elder's birthdy celebration, you could bring practically anything, especially lucky money in a red envelope. One thing that is taboo is clock as a gift, because the word clock in Chinese has the same sound as "end", which is considered unlucky for such an occasion.
Typical food would probably include include dishes normally served at Chinese banquets, such as chicen, shrimp, vegetables, and almost always, long noodle. Long noodle symbolizes longevity at such an occassion.
