I was born in China and grew up in the US. I've attended Chinese school for 6 years in NY while growing up. I've passed proficiency in the language at the University of Pennsylvania. I work for a company that has an overseas office located in Shanghai, China, so I am very much accustomed to communicating in Chinese as well as conducting business in China (I used to travel there 4 times a year).

Question
I am going to China next week to see my girlfriend. We will get engaged at this time. I would like to take her mother a gift but have no clue as to what. Can you offer any ideas or advice? I have also been told about Hong Bao. Is this still customary and if so what is appropriate?

Answer
Hi Larry,

First of all, congratulations on your engagement!

It's very thoughtful of you to want to bring your girlfriend's mom a gift.  If you are thinking of hong bao (red envelope), I'm not sure if it's customary or appropriate.  I suggest that you discuss this with your girlfriend (unless you are planning on surprising her with your visit).  If it's not something you feel you should discuss with your girlfriend, you can always her her mom something gold or jade, can't go wrong with either one.

Good luck!

Nicola
