Question
Hi Shannon,

I lived in Taiwan for 5 years and am kinda ashamed to say that I still don't know why Chinese (and Korean and Japanese) buildings have roofs that slope upwards at the corners. I would be grateful if you could explain both the practical as well as symbolic reasons behind this if you know ?

Thanks,
Bart

Answer
Hey Bart,

I have never thought about that question before. Well, we take it for granted. They are called Wing Corners. As you said, they slope upward, like the wings of a bird. As for the symbolic reasons, I really don't know. They might represent the thriving spirit.

You may consult a Chinese architect.
