Chinese/appropriate baby gift
Expert: Shannon G. - 9/27/2007
QuestionQUESTION: I have friends that are Vietnamese/Chinese who are having a baby boy soon. Although American, they are very traditional and I want to give them a traditional baby gift that is appropriate with their culture.
I understand this is the year of the pig in both cultures and that both Red and Gold are lucky colors. However, I was also told not to give red clothing.
I love the idea of the red-thread bracelets but is this appropriate? Is this something required to come from a family member, or can an Anglo friend give them to parents & child?
I want to do something they will like and that will have meaning. Any suggestions?
ANSWER: Dear Kathy,
The perfect gift for a newly born baby in our culture is a red-thread bracelet with a tiny gold or silver pig(as he will be born this year)attached to it. The bracelet should be adjustable so that the baby can always wear it as he grows up. This gift doesn't have to be from a family remember. Usually family members or very good friends will give.
Another similar gift is a red-thread necklace with a tiny gold or silver lock(of course the traditional Chinese style) which means keeping the health and treasure with him forever.
Hope it helps.
You may write me for any assistance.
Cheers!

QUESTION: Is it appropriate to include bracelets for both sets of grandparents? Would this still hold true if they follow Buddhism?
AnswerHey Kathy,
I think gifts for grandma or older females should be jade bracelets. For grandpa a big jade or gold ring is proper, if I understand your question correctly.
It's culture thing, not a religion thing. So no need to worry whether it follows Buddhism or not.
You are so considerate :-)
