Chiropractors/Rib out? Rib/side/back/shoulder pain.....

Question
Hello. I have had moderate (sometimes severe) pain in my left side since a
severe kidney infection the end of June (6 months). I have tried manipulation
by my osteo, tons of tests (which found nothing except mild swelling in the
subcutaneous layer found by the MRI, and colitis found via colonoscopy), &
now physical therapy. The PT said my rib is out of joint (?) & that my spine
curves to the right & wondered if I had ever been diagnosed with scoliosis,
which I have not. I currently take 3-4 vicodin a day to ease my pain. I can't
sleep on that side & if things touch that area, it hurts. It does not hurt more
than normal to take a deep breath. I have pain that follows that rib around to
the front & pain that goes up under my shoulder blade & when it is really
bad, down my arm. I am tired of masking the pain with painkillers & hope to
find the cause so I can get my life back to normal. I don't know what else to
try or do...

Also, I was born with congenital hip displacia, but was told it would have no
effect. My osteo says I am hypermobile & that is my rib problem, but did not
say anything about it being out of place.

What do I do next? Should I be seeing an ortho? I am totally confused....

Answer
Dear Heidi,

You may have a myofascial pain syndrome as well as a rib joint dysfunction.  Find a provider that can thoroughly examine your myofascia and test your muscles.  Look for providers that are well skilled in myofascial release methods.  Well known and valid programs include the Active Release Technique and GRaston Technique (www.grastontechnique.com).   A well-skilled chiropractic doctor can examine and treat.  Exercise is part of any musculoskeletal equation, and if you are physically deconditioned, that is not helpful.
