Chiropractors/Posterior Rib Subluxations

Question
Dr. Newhart,

I have been having difficult breathing on my right side for quite some time now.  I've seen orthopedists, neurologists, massage therapists, PT, and even chiropractors and still have the same problem (MRIs, X-Rays etc.).  I am unable to take a deep breath on my right side.  My ribs just don't want to move like they should.  A massage therapist said it was as if the right side of my rib cage was locked up.  When I attempt to take a deep breath I feel a pull from up right upper back to my neck.  It's very restrictive.  I've had chiropractors tell me my ribs are not moving properly and that they are "out", but none have been able to provide relief or at least nothing that lasted more than a day.  I'm 25 years old and up until 6 months ago (when all this started), I was a triathlete.  I just can't take a deep breath.  Is there anything you'd suggest I do? Exercises, stretches, a chiro in Michigan you might recommend?  I am truly at wits end as this has begun to affect my personal and professional life.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I just wish it wasn't such a "crapshoot" in finding someone who can help and that truly cares about helping.

Sincerely,

Jim

Answer
I wish I could direct you to someone in Michigan.  We see this problem quite frequently...rib misalignment can definitely cause you to not be able to take a deep breath.  I would try an approach of myofascial release, and adjustment to the rib...both in the same visit.  This 2 pronged attack should be able to get you relief.
