Chiropractors/Lower back pain

Question
I have had minor pain in my back for a few years now.  2 weeks ago, I started getting aches/stiffness in my neck that went down my back.  A few days later the stiffness in my neck went away but never from my back.  It is hard to sleep unless i lay down in hot water for a while.  The pain also goes away if I crack my back. Either by twisting or pushing my thighs with my hands to crack my upper back.  It also goes away almost immediately if I lay on the floor.  In addition, for the last 10 years or so I always find it a lot easier to breath after cracking my back.  I am 34 and played football and wrestling from 14-23.  I am wondering what type of doctor should I see first or if I should try using wet heat to relieve the pain?

Answer
Using the wet/moist heat is a good start to help loosen it.  I would check with a good chiropractor (usually found by word of mouth).  He or she should be able to diagnose and treat the problem, as well as set you up into a rehab. program to help stabilize the spine.  They should also be able to differentiate if there is a more serious problem that a family doctor should see.
