Question
I am having difficulty writing and holding my pen or pencil, with my right hand.  My right shoulder use to half dislocate since the age of 15. Twenty years ago I was involved in a car accident, the safety belt protected me, but I was badly bruised and collar bone is still sensitive. I am 17kg over my normal weight.  I have an underactive Thyroid condition, which is stable right now. Tension in my arms, especially around elbows. What advice would you give me, just pushing on C7, I know there is a blockage of flow there.  Thank You, and Warm Regards, Ansie

Answer
Difficulty writing and holding a pen does raise the suspicion of nerve compression in the mid- to lower neck region or in the arm or wrist.

C7 nerve root compression is generally more associated with carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms (numbness/tingling in the thumb, index finger, and middle finger, and weakness in the hands).

Nerve root compression may generally arise as a result of disc herniation or entrapment in the musculature of the arm or wrist. I would recommend further evaluation, either with a neurologist or a chiropractor, to determine the cause of the problem.

Generally, in the case of nerve root compression, a combination of manipulation, rehabilitative exercise, and anti-inflammatory medications may help. Occupational therapists or physical therapists who specialize in hand rehabilitation may also help.
