Chiropractors/neck and upper back pain

Question
Dear Dr. Paul:
Four  months ago I started having a pain on my neck and muscles between the shoulder blades.  I had an X-ray and the results were not explained to me by my doctor.  He suggested I should see a physical therapist.  The x-ray results read as follows:   The cervical lordosis is straightened. Degenerative facet change, left greater that right, C 3 caudal. Osteophytosis without encroachment on the posterior canal, mild narrowing, C3-4 interspace consistent with disc degeneration.  Osteophytic encroachment on neural foramina bilaterally, C4 caudal right, C3 caudal left.  How serious my condition is and do I need an MRI to find out exactly what is going on.
I am 57 years old, however, in great shape due to working out and watching my diet all my life.   MRI is an expensive procedure and I think the doctor hesitates to recommend it.  The pain comes and goes.   It is not severe, however, I cannot lift anything or engage in any kind of activity.  Your expert advice will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you very much.
Elizabeth

Answer
Boiled down, your x-ray says you have degenerative disk disease.  Your curvature in the neck is straightened from muscle tightness, and left uncorrected, may lead to more degeneration later in life.  I would suggest a good chiropractor assess and treat you, and set you up on a good rehab program to strengthen your spine.
