Expert: Scott F. Gillman, DC, DACBSP - 2/6/2008
QuestionMy Chiro tell me from looking at my Xray that my neck should have a 42% curve and mine has 13% curve. He has put together a program to correct this,
3x week for 12wks
2x week for 12wks
1x week for 28wks
2x X-rays and 7 progress exams.
Please can you tell me if this is a reasonable program

Carole
AnswerDear Carole,
Please check through some of the past questions I've answered on this topic. In short, the entire paradigm for your treatment completely lacks any sound validity. The frequency of care is excessive. The goal of care - to improve your neck curve - is an unreasonable goal. It is very possible that your neck curve will not change, or that it will change only a little, or that it will change and you will still have neck pain, or that it will not change and your neck pain will go away in two treatment sessions. Personally, I think it's garbage and until good, sound research can elucidate the necessity of having a 40 degree neck curve verses a 20 degree curve, there is no reason to put someone through such an unfounded program except to make a bundle of cash for the doctor. I would suggest finding an evidence-based practitioner that is better at providing conservative care that is more in line with reasonable treatment paradigms.
'Good luck,
