has been a sharp pain on and around where my sternum is. I am a dancer and
take dance class everyday. It hurts most when I curve forward.

Answer
Dear Emily,

The most likely scenario is that you have strained either the attachment point of the muscles on the sternum (pec muscles or abdominal muscles) or you have a restriction in the movements of the rib/sternum joints and inflammation the costal cartilage (cartilage around those rib joints) and the joint capsule that surrounds the joint.

Both of these issues are minor problems, but can create significant pain.  I would recommend that you do gentle stretching of the area, (pec and ab muscles) and utilize ice for pain and inflammation control - 15 to 20 minutes at a time.  Over the course of 3-5 days the pain should diminish, however it may not completely disappear.

If the pain increases, then I would suggest that you go to a local chiropractor and have them examine the tissue and anatomy around the sternum.  If the rib/sternal articulation is not appropriate in orientation of movement or function, then a mild manipulation of the area can normalize function and reduce pain.  You may need 4-6 visits for the joint to move freely without further compromise, and the area can be quite painful to the touch, so prepare for that.

Good Luck Emily.

Respectfully,
