Chiropractors/Sternum Cracks

Question
Hello,

My sternum cracks after sitting for long periods of time, is there anything I can do to stop this?

Answer
Kent,

The sternum is not a very mobile structure; there are two joints at the top (the manuobriosternal joint) and the bottom (the xyphoidsternal joint) that have very limited movement in the front-to-back planes, but they are generally restricted from gross movement by means of fibrous ligaments. The ribs attach to the sides of the sternum by means of cartilage and allow for some expansion during breathing. Most of the movement that occurs at the manubriosternal joint takes place with breathing. The xyphoidsternal joint typically fuses in adults in the middle-age years.

I have absolutely no idea why you would experience "cracking" in the sternal region at all, let alone after sitting for a prolonged period of time.

I regret that I cannot provide you with additional information. If you experience pain in this region, I recommend seeing your family physician.
