Chiropractors/neck cracking

Question
Dr. Newhart, I was wondering about that cracking sound made during a chiropractic adjustment.  Does it mean it's a better adjustment or that your neck has more movement when the sound is heard?

Answer
The sound is nitrogen gas that is dissolved in the fluid of the joint.  When the joint is moved, the pressure in the joint changes, the gas comes out of solution, and a "pop" is heard.  There is not always a sound with a proper adjustment, or that there is extra movement.

Since you obviously didn't like my answer, I'll refer you to the following:  http://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/mysteries/joint.html
