Chiropractors/neck cracking

Question
a few weeks ago my neck started cracking on its own, and whenever i turn my head to the right it makes a grinding sound and cracks and when i straighten it back up it also makes that noise. I was just wondering what you thought might be causeing this, and if there is anything i can do treat it myself? ive recently done a lot of yardwork that had a lot of heavy lifting. the neck creaking seems to be worse in the morning when i wake up. i did see my chiropractor, but he thought it maybe is something that will take a while to heal. i would appreciate any suggestions you may have on what this may be and how i can treat this myself. thank you.

Answer
Hello Mike,

Often sleeping in a awkward position can irritate the posterior joints of the spine (Facets)and cause muscular tension. Especially true if you do not remember injuring the neck!  The grinding or cracking sound may be due to the tendons snapping over the joint or the swollen facet/s.  Chiropractic treatment may increase your healing time and decrease the tension in the joint and musculature.  Self stretching and icing is always helpful.  Depending on the results of the exam, you may want to schedule more Chiropractic treatment.

Have a great day,
