Question
I am 17 years old and at a soccer game on Sunday i "twisted" my knee- literally thats how it felt. I was in horrible pain but there was no initial swelling. When i woke up monday i noticed swelling and i could not straighten my leg or even bend it. I could walk - i walked with my leg bent. There is a strange crease at the bottom of the knee cap also. It is now Wednesday and nothing has seen to change except for the fact that a get flashes of pain randomly through my leg. Also when i touch the sides it hurts.  My mom is and NP and doesn't think i need to go to the doctors but she hasn't even felt is she has just looked at it from standing up. I am nervous i did something more damaging than just a twist. Should I go get it checked out or do you think it will heal on it self?- Natasha

Answer
Hello Natasha,

You may want to have a MRI of the knee, delayed swelling can be a sign of cartilage damage to the meniscus etc.  Also you will be able to see if the ligaments were torn.  No x-rays as they only show bone.  Ice and elevate the knee much as possible.

Have a great day,
