Question
i recently asked you a question regarding the lucency in my ct scan of the neck. thank you for your fast and informative response. i was wondering about the lucency showing up because when i got an mri done the part of the report said HISTORY/INDICATION: injury with history of fracture, neck pain. i was in a auto accident as a child but unfortunately the only people who knew of my injuries were my parents and they have both passed away. basically what i am asking this time is if the mri report says that i have a history of a fracture does that mean that i have had a fracture in my neck sometime in the past ? thank you

Answer
Hello Chris,

Thank you for your followup question.

"....HISTORY/INDICATION: injury with history of fracture, neck pain.....",  this phrase does not indicate old or new.

We have to document WHY a particular test is done.  This phrase MAY mean that there is a diagnosis of possible fracture NOW- due to the accident.  This phrase MAY mean that in the past there was a fracture.  This alerts the Radiologist to look for evidence of a particular problem, or to look in a particular area.

IF you had a fracture as a child, in all likelihood----- you would remember the lengthy treatment, even if you did not remember the injury incident.

IF you had a fracture as a child, you would no longer have a lucency, but rather probably have an opacity at the area of repair.

"History" in this context MAY mean years ago, or could mean hours ago.

Hope this helps.

THANK YOU for coming back!
