Chiropractors/Broken Ribs

Question
Dear Dr.
I am writing in regard to my friend. On vacation he broken 3 ribs(2 upper ribs and 1 lower down). Not even 2 weeks after his injury he started working, lifting heavy weight. It has now been ago 5 weeks since the injury and is not feeling as much pain but he now can feel something(his ribs) grinding when he lifts and lowers his arms. He is also experiencing the same grinding feeling(I can actual hear it) in his neck when he turns his head. This just started in the past few days. I am concerned since he has missed his follow up appointments.
Can you please give me your opinion on his situation.
Thank you for your time.
From
Cheryl

Answer
Ribs need time to heal.  The grinding in the ribs could mean they are rubbing and you could hear it.  Unlike years ago where they wrapped the ribs, they do not do that now to avoid pneumonia.  If you can find someone that uses low level laser therapy in your area he might find some benefit.  studies show that LLLT can help speed the healing of broken ribs (as well as other fractures) significantly.
