Chiropractors - Middle back pain from sleeping/sciatica

Expert: Dr. Paul Newhart - 6/17/2009

Question
1. I have middle back pain across the entire back that would at times wake me up during the night. The pain is like a dull lingering ache. After getting out of bed, the pain would leave within the hour OR I take multiple pain meds and hope it goes away faster.  My main problem is that it happens randomly.  I can't pinpoint any activities that may trigger it.  I've tried sleeping in all different positions, changed my mattress 3 times, wear shoe insoles and work out regularly.  Doctors have x-rayed me and can't find anything.  They only prescribe 800 ml ibuprofen.  It's pointless to take medicine before I go to sleep if my back won't hurt that night.  So I end up suffering when it does hurt and wait for the meds to kick in.  HELP!

2. I randomly get pains to the left of my tailbone.  I belive this is a sciatica.  It's sometimes hard to walk straight, and I get sharp pains when I move a certain way.  I try to stretch the muscles around it, but nothing help.  It will just go away and re-appear whenever.  I have noticed that it hurts a week prior to menstruation.  Are there any ways to make this pain stop and not return?

Answer
Without an actual hands on exam, it is difficult to diagnose.  But, judging from your description, I would suggest you find a good chiropractor to assess it.  it is not uncommon for a medical doctor to take an xray and deem it "normal".  It sounds as if there is a dysfunction in the muscles and their attachment to the spine, causing the pain.  A good chiropractor should be able to assess and treat it, as well as set you up in a good rehab program.
