Just as MDs - Medical Doctors, Doctor of Medicine are NOT Dentists, Ph.D.s or DCs; The Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) is NOT a Medical Doctor or DMD, DDS (Dentists), or DVM (Veterinarian), or DPM (Podiatrist).
Academia and STATE Licensing authorities recognize MANY different kinds of Doctors/ Doctorates.
A Doctor of Chiropractic will hold pre-requisite education; usually holding a Bachelors Degree. This is very similar to the MD or DDS/DMD. Core pre-requisite requirements usually include Biology, Chemistry, Physics. Many PROFESSIONAL schools- Medicine, Dentistry, Chiropractic do not REQUIRE a bachelors degree (BS, BA), BUT the professional schools do PRESCRIBE their own REQUIRED courses.
DC = Doctor of Chiropractic. The DC is usually NOT an MD, although there are people out there holding multiple degrees. My best friend in Chiropractic School was already a Pharmacist, My fraternity (Pi Kappa Chi Chiropractic Fraternity) has at least Two DC/MD doctors (one was a DC first, then to MD school; the other was an MD first, then to (Palmer College of Chiropractic) DC school).
DCs and MDs (and dentists, and podiatrists) usually have four more years of academic study after their undergraduate college days.
MDs then also have an internship or residency which combines academics and hospital training, often leading to their specialties.
DCs have a year of clinic training during their 4th year at Chiropractic school.
